Don't Go Chasing Waterfalls!

If your home or business experiences water loss this winter, there are several tips to utilize to minimize the damage.

  • Most importantly, remember to shut off the water source, place aluminum foil between legs and carpets, remove all wet area rugs, and open any closet doors, to aid in the drying process while you wait for the professionals to arrive.

  • Safety First! Bacteria and mold are a very serious matter and anyone working in that designated area needs to make sure they are wearing the proper protective gear.

  • Remove damaged items – Get all water damaged items out of the given area. Although mitigation professionals can do this for you, the cost does add up, do what you can and save that money for something else.

  • If the water damage is not too significant you can remove it yourself with a shop vacuum. This is extremely cost effective!

  •  Once the affected areas and contents are mitigated and removed, you should clean the area with a thorough disinfectant. A significant amount of the necessary cleaning supplies involve bleach, so it is important to remember to read labels and use protective gear when handling the cleaning supplies.

  • The more moisture the more problems - Bacteria can begin to grow between 48-72 hours, and temperature is a critical component of that initial growth. It is critical that you start the drying process as soon as possible!

  • Remove any affected building materials that may hinder the mitigation process. This includes any baseboards, drywall, carpets, and pads.

  • Remove any personal and\or valuable items out of the affected areas. This includes any electronics, computers, files, documents, etc.

  • Invest in proper metal shelving! This can provide a safe harbor for boxes and other personal items if water begins to rise.

  • Make Spring Cleaning a family activity! – uproot all unnecessary clutter.
